My Office Hours: Tuesday, 10-11, 1-3 Room 218
About me: Worked on various publications in North West and Wales in roles from from junior reporter to night editor. Law graduate turned journalist via postgrad at Cardiff. Returned to the law by co-writing McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists. Work with the NCTJ as chief examiner and member of its law board.
My Media Week: Guardian, Times, Mail or Sun most days of the week. Online broadsheets for law news. Gazette&Herald for local news where I live (depths of North Yorkshire) Various law websites and blogs to keep track of news. Intermittent blogging, twittering getting to be a bit of a habit now.
Best Piece of Advice I’ve Been Given: Write it like you’re telling it to your mate in the pub. A good sub needs eyes like a shithouse rat. Get in the door, get everything, and poison the well.
My Proudest Piece of Journalism: Starting as a junior hack with ambitions of writing for The Guardian and winding up writing for it 20 years later – got there in the end.
Research: McNae every two years; PhD research on media law; media reporting of young offenders
In the real world: Bringing up sons aged six and three who are a force of nature, mountain biking, guitar, photography, writing
